The Cellar Jazz Society (CJS) is one of Vancouver’s newest and most dynamic arts organizations. It’s also rooted in a long and rich history of presenting high-level jazz in the city.
The Society is dedicated to fostering public education, understanding, and appreciation of jazz by presenting performances at public venues and educational institutions. CJS did exactly that by presenting its inaugural series of jazz concerts in April 2014 at Pyatt Hall, a state-of-the-art theatre in downtown Vancouver. The society presented more shows at Pyatt Hall in June 2014 as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, and has unveiled an exciting series of concerts for fall/winter 2014. GEORGE CABLES TRIO:
http://www.georgecables.com/
featuring VICTOR LEWIS drums, CHUCK DEARDORF bass, GEORGE CABLES piano
This much is true: George Cables belongs in the pantheon of great jazz pianists. Over the course of his 50-year career, Cables has consistently brought his singular melodic style and exquisite touch to live performances and recordings. Never flashy but always tasteful and hip, Cables is the quintessential rhythm section player who’s also an expressive soloist. It’s no wonder he’s long been in demand and answered the call to collaborate with an impressive list of jazz icons: Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Art Pepper, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Max Roach, and countless others.
For many years Cables has also been building significant repertoire as a composer/arranger and bandleader. He’s released 30 sublime albums as a leader, with sidemen like Billy Higgins, Gary Bartz, and Stanley Clarke. Regardless of the context, Cables is always a team player, who actively listens to his fellow musicians and develops a close rapport with them. Ultimately, as a true jazz piano master, Cables conveys a deep feeling for the music and jazz tradition as a whole. That’s exactly the kind of resonant impact he made during the first concert of the New York With Weeds tour in March 2014.
For this rare concert by Cables in Vancouver, he will perform with the great drummer Victor Lewis, who has had an illustrious career playing alongside Stan Getz, Woody Shaw, Kenny Barron, Cables, and many others. Rounding out the trio will be one of Seattle’s best bassists Chuck Deardorf
