Take the glitz, glamour, and censorship of 1934 Hollywood, a sophisticated German director and have him implore movie producer Jack Warner to pony up to do a movie version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Jack is forced to agree because his sexy mistress demands to be cast in a “prestige” picture.
Now imagine that Oberon, the fairly king, and his sidekick, Puck, have transmogrified onto the set and been cast to play themselves. That is what Ken Ludwig has done in this farce full of impersonations, comic interpretations and cleverly contrived complications of lust, love, jealousy, and fairy mischief.
