Shane Koyczan, Spoken Word – Kay Meek Theatre
May 11
8pm
Powerfully engaging and authentic in attitude, his explorations are relevant to our times in the way that Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Gord Downie and Leonard Cohen are to theirs. But unlike the musicians he’s often compared to, poets rarely infiltrate pop culture. Shane Koyczan emerges in a new wave of 21st century poetry that dares to belong to the people and speak directly to them in their own voice. You only have to hear his spoken word once to be hooked–humane, furious, sexy, political, tragic, and so funny you’ll be laughing through your tears. Canada’s next poet Laureate. Kay Meek Centre has confirmed Shane for a main stage performance. As a part of this visit, Shane will perform short pieces in a number of schools at morning assembly, work with poetry students in some of those schools delivering workshops and participate in Q/As. This pilot project will culminate with a POETRY SLAM in our Studio space for students to perform their own work for a select audience.
