Kay Meek Centre

Single Tickets On Sale AUGUST 1st!

Returning to the Kay Meek Centre by popular demand! Locarno is the Latin project of Juno award winning musician and Paperboys frontman, Tom Landa.

The music, like him, is part Mexican but with strong doses of Cuban Son, Folk music, pop and funk. There are threads of Son Jarocho and salsa, but more edgy and contemporary.

The music could be compared to Manu Chao, Ozomatli or Rodrigo and Gabriela but in a truly original and new flavour in the Latin music genre.

Tom Landa was born and raised in Mexico City where he started to perform at quite a young age. He remembers regularly performing for family and in grade school taking the stage at school assemblies.

Tom immigrated to Canada as a teenanger where he quickly embraced the sounds of North American pop music. He began his professional music career at age 20 but prior to that he explored photography (still does) and for a period of time he waited tables and worked at a record store. Although his musical career started by singing songs in English he tells me that he always sang in Spanish too.

Tom blames hearing a record by Los Lobos for his return to his roots which prompted him to embark on a new musical path. For the last few years he has been working on this heartfelt project in company with world renowned Cuban trumpet player Miguelito Valdes, who has worked with everyone from the Buena Vista Social Club to the Afro Cuban All Stars. Their new sound is heavily influenced by Mexican culture but also taps into his local environment and musicians in his current hometown of Vancouver.

The result is a mixture of traditional Mexican and Cuban son, while the style combines elements of folk, pop, and all things Cuban put together in a unique way with great use of the violin and strong instrumental solos throughout each song.
