A pre-concert talk will take place from 2-2.20 with Tom Wright from Vancouver Opera.
Tom Wright is the Director of Artistic Planning for Vancouver Opera.
Mr. Wright grew up in North Vancouver and discovered his love of theatre while attending Handsworth Secondary School. He started his career in Opera as an intern at the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1983. His involvement with the Banff Arts Festival continued for a decade, as he worked as Stage Manager in the Opera, Music Theatre and Jazz Programs and handled Festival coordination. His experience with artists and musicians continued through several Artistic and Production related positions.
In 1986 Mr. Wright became an Assistant Stage Manager for Calgary Opera and continued working as a theatre technician throughout Western Canada. In 1989, he became the Stage Manager and Production Manager for Calgary Opera and remained in that dual position until 1996, at which point he became Production Manager for both Calgary Opera and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
Before joining Vancouver Opera in June 2007, Mr. Wright was the Director of Artistic and Production Administration at Arizona Opera, where he oversaw the growth of the artistic and production departments of the company. The company saw yearly increases in subscription renewals and ticket sales after Mr. Wright’s joining in 1998.
Mr. Wright now oversees Vancouver Opera’s Education, Artistic and Production departments. He is central to the casting of VO’s mainstage and other productions, as well as to the overall development of the Vancouver Opera Chorus and Orchestra. His work in the creation of the new production of Eugene Onegin, the Canadian premère of Nixon in China and world première of Lillian Alling was a key component in raising the local and international profile of the company. His next project is the development and implementation of the Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program, which will begin accepting applicants in the fall of 2012.
