Kazu will show students the process involved in creating the Amulet series, from initial sketches and concepts to story development, pacing, character development and revision. He’ll talk about his early influences in comic making, and how his bakcground in filmmaking translates to visual storytelling. Whiule he’s talking, Kazu will be sketching on his electronic sketchpad, showing students how computer technology and artistic talent combine to create stunning visual effects.

Kazu Kibuishi is the author and illustrator of the New York Times-bestselling Amulet graphic novel series for young readers. He is also the creator of Copper, his popular web comic that was published in 2010 and the eight Flight anthologies. He is also the editor of Explorer: The Mystery Boxes and Explorer: The Lost Islands, a new comic anthology series for a younger audience. Most recently, Kazu was honored to be chosen to redesign the Harry Potter book covers to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the first book. The new covers were released in a boxed set by Scholastic in September of 2013.

Booktopia, the West Vancouver Children’s Literary Festival, is an annual festival intended to promote literacy, celebrate language arts and cultivate creative thought amongst youth and families in West Vancouver.

Held in the first week of May, Booktopia offers a series of events for preschool, elementary and secondary school students at two venues: the Kay Meek Centre and the West Vancouver Memorial Library. Events include author visits, workshops, a youth art exhibit, a puppet show and more.
