The Mill Project

Event Details

West Vancouver Museum

Bruce Emmett explores a single site in West Vancouver that contains three unique histories: the Vedder River Shingle Mill, West Vancouver High school and the Inglewood “Mill” Skatepark, the first skateboard park constructed in Canada in 1977, and subsequently buried underneath five feet of soil and rock in 1984. The rationale for Emmett’s Emily Carr University of Art and Design thesis project is embodied in this subterranean artifact: an investigation of subcultural identity, an exploration of local history and heritage, and debate around public and private space.

The Mill project asks: what happens to the histories and mythologies of a place when meaning is subverted, and new meanings are superimposed on top of existing ones?

Guest curated by landscape urbanist Alyssa Schwann, Instructor, University of British Columbia, School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture
