The Chan Centre for Performing Arts at UBC presents pipa virtuoso Wu Man alongside one of the world’s foremost chamber music ensembles, The Shanghai Quartet, with A Night in Ancient and New China, May 9 at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Wu Man has been praised as a ‘force of nature’ by Gramophone Magazine and has served as inspiration for a number of luminary composers. This unforgettable concert will explore the rich traditions of China’s music, while offering a uniquely contemporary vision with such works as a chamber version of Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera, a suite of traditional Chinese folk songs arranged by violinist Yi-Wen Jiang, solo pipa works by Wu Man, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No.11 in F minor, Op.95 (the “Serioso” quartet).
