Kay Meek Centre presents Miss Shakespeare by Tracey Power

Event Details

Kay Meek Centre

It is the 1600’s and women are banned from the stage, but the suppressed female mind is finding it difficult to stay… well, suppressed.  Behind the dingy walls of The Cage Tavern, six women explore the seductive power of the theatre. With a musical score influenced by underground European Cabaret the women embrace their creativity, their voice, and their freedom. But the law is not on their side and if these artists are to truly have a voice, they must find the courage to get beyond the walls and in front of an audience. Daddy’s had his turn, and now the mad mind of Judith Shakespeare explodes in this saucy new musical.

“I want to create something no one would ever believe was created by a woman.” – Judith Shakespeare

The Evolution of Miss Shakespeare

Miss Shakespeare was inspired by the playwright’s desire to explore the creative minds of 16th/17th century women, who are largely absent from the theatre canon.  It was influenced by the untimely demise of the Vancouver Playhouse, where Tracey was performing during its final days, which reminded her of the importance of maintaining our heritage and stories.  It was stimulated into its first full draft by Tracey’s experiences working on Ubuntu with two South African actors who described the challenges, tribulations, and exhilaration of performing in underground theatre during Apartheid.
