Comedian Wanda Sykes has been called “one of the funniest stand-up comics” by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly’s “25 Funniest People in America”. Her sharp, smart-witted style has sent her career in many different areas.
Born in Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in Maryland, Sykes’ stand-up career began in 1987 at a “Coors Light Super Talent Showcase” in Washington, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience. She continued to hone her talents at local venues while working as a procurement officer at the National Security Agency before she moved to New York in the early 90’s.
Her big break came in 1997 when she was hired to join HBO’s critically acclaimed The Chris Rock Show. As a performer and writer on the show, she went on to win an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Writer for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special”.
In 2003, Sykes starred in the FOX sitcom, Wanda at Large which she also wrote and produced. At the same time, she hosted her own Comedy Central special entitled Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied and provided the voice of “Gladys Murphy” on Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers.
A year later, she produced and starred in Comedy Central’s Wanda Does It where she tried various non-showbiz jobs. She then played the role of “Barb” on the sitcom,The New Adventures of Old Christine which aired on CBS from 2006 to 2010.
Sykes has also hosted her own weekly late-night talk show, The Wanda Sykes Show which aired Saturday nights on FOX. Her film credits include Monster-In-Law, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and License to Wed.
